Press Release
Inspired both by nature and the human arts of music and literature, Michael Grine’s abstract paintings are an experiment with
color and the possibilities of space and perspective. Vivid colors are either thrown or mixed right on the canvas, resulting in bright configurations
of shape and form. Grine then uses centrifugal force in combination with gravity to distort those lines and contours,
layering translucent or opaque paints on the canvas in set or random patterns. In terms of composition,
he masterfully uses perspective to draw the viewer into his imagined worlds, lending a depth to the overall effect that speaks to
the limitless potential of space and time.
Working with several media, including oils, acrylics, tempera, computers, metal, and found objects, Grine pushes his art into previously unexplored
territories that call into question our own constructed confines of place and temporal boundaries. What Grine achieves is an emotional
response of wonder and purpose, caught in swirls of color reverberating with the rhythm and movement of a seemingly boundless dance. - Agora Gallery
Reviews
A dynamic artist with an innovative and highly distinctive style, Michael Grine draws inspiration from many different sources. Taking a holistic approach,
he is influenced by nature, music, literature, other artists and his friends and family – these diverse sources all contribute to motivate him to innovate
and experiment in different media. Grine has used more traditional media such as oils and acrylics but more recently has turned to computers, metal and even
found objects, using them to make marks in new ways and seeking to push himself beyond his comfort zone. In his latest series, paint is thrown or mixed
directly on canvas, which is then spun to force the paint outwards, creating chaotic radiating forms that explode from the centre of the paintings.
Often geometric and layered in construction, the intense colors and deft patterning that Grine develops directly convey
the energy captured within the paint. - Agora Gallery - ArtisSpectrum Magazine
